From my limited experience, let me tell you that I've encountered a superior number of cheating wives vs. couples.

Yes, honest conversation about desires is the best option. If the partners can't agree, then parting is probably the best option.
Now that sounds easy, but a lot depends on what stage in life you are in. I know from my own experience that I didn't understand or accept my own desires until later in life. It is especially difficult to accept and live out your desires when young since your upbringing has trained you to avoid the unconventional. I would have handled my early dating experiences and my first marriage differently had I been freed of traditional ideas about sex and marriage. I would have been more open and courageous about sharing my desires with my sex partners instead of feeling guilty about wanting something different. In reality, they probably wanted the same things, so we just prevented each other from fulfilling our desires.
