While the risks are real, and not to be trivialised, I have been doing this for several years and had lots of partners, all bareback. I get tested regularly and have never tested positive for anything. So I do think that as long as you are not totally irresponsible and somewhat selective about who you go with, you can have many years of fantastic fun without getting something nasty.
I would suggest taking the precaution of being vaccinated for Hepatitis B and HPV though, just because those are preventable and not tested for in routine sexual health tests. That can cause significant heath issues despite not knowing you have them. I had both vaccines, if you are an adult woman, you will be told that HPV vaccines are for girls and not much point in having it as an adult. This is only partially true, sexually active women will have already come into contact with at least one HPV variant, but the vaccine will still protect against other variants that you haven’t yet encountered. I can’t stress how important this is, as there is no cure for Hepatitis B and if you were really unlucky and contracted HIV along with Hepatitis, the treatment is difficult. It is well worth minimising the risk, so you can enjoy the fun with less to worry about.
Clearly there are some people who are against vaccines, please don’t argue with me, it is fine if you don’t want to be vaccinated, but this advice is aimed at others like me that have no issue with vaccines.
