Just one minor point "Deleting off hard drives doesn't do away with it" is only true if you don't know how to do it. For operating system dating back as far as at least OS/2 Warp (and probably further), there have been tools which do a pretty good job of making files irrecoverable. Some may be better than others, sure, but with tools like "shred" on Linux, I would be extremely surprised if that was ever recoverable. Of course, encrypting your home partition would add even an extra layer to it all, so in general terms, I rarely worry about someone recovering anything from my old drives 😛

im not worried about my own hard drives security. I worry about trusting whichever other person has the files and says they wont post/share it.
if someone said they wanted to video me and their wife on my phone/camera and im the sole owner of those files, it wouldn't bother me. but that doesn't seem likely.
